A FEW WORDS ON SUSTAINABLE PALM OIL

Palm oil has long been a hot topic in the cosmetics and food industries. The bad rep of palm oil concerns deforestation, habitat-loss of some species and high amounts of carbon emissions. However, there is also certified sustainable palm oil on the market, spearheaded by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil, the RSPO.

The RSPO is a non-profit organization that has developed a set of environmental and social criteria which companies must comply with in order to produce Certified Sustainable Palm Oil (CSPO). When properly applied, these criteria can help minimize the negative impact of palm oil cultivation on the environment and communities in palm oil-producing regions.

The RSPO has more than 4,000 members worldwide who represent all links along the palm oil supply chain. They have committed to produce, source and/or use sustainable palm oil certified by the RSPO. This means sustainable farming and no deforestation.

So why is palm oil so widely used in the cosmetics industries? Palm oil is vegan, natural and cost-efficient, and is used to derive a multitude of cosmetic raw materials, from glycerin to sodium lauryl sulphate. The emulsifier we use in our Face Cream, polyglyceryl-6 distearate, is derived from RSPO certified palm oil.

From a sustainability point of view, palm oil has by far the highest crop yield of the vegetable oils used in skincare, producing up to ten times more oil per unit area than e.g. rapeseed. In essence, this means that palm oil requires less land and less water for farming. Over ten times as much land would be needed if palm oil was replaced by rapeseed oil as a feedstock for the global cosmetics and food industries. The cosmetics industry uses only a fraction of the palm oil that the food industry does, but the pressure to switch to sustainable palm oil is higher in the cosmetics industry than in the food industry.
