Solvent. Water. The main vehicle for the Happiness Mist.

Humectant. Birch sap, or birch water or juice, is an edible liquid tapped directly from birch trees, and and has been used to treat different ailments for centuries. On skin, it hydrates, tones and firms, thanks to its rich content of minerals, oligo-elements and sugar. Origin: Finland.

Solvent and humectant. Apart from being an excellent, non-irritating solvent, the glycol propanediol has excellent hydrating and preservative boosting properties. The one we use is made from fermentation of glucose, from corn.

Skin conditioning. The Albatrellus Confluens mushroom is an edible mushroom, also known as Northern truffle. On skin, it alleviates neurogenic irritation, instantly soothes and protects irritated skin, and protects against the effects of infra-red radiation. Origin. Finland.

Humectant and skin conditioning. Xylitol is a pre-biotic sugar that hydrates and conditions skin and supports the skin’s microbiome. It has potent anti-bacterial properties and provides a cooling, soothing effect on skin. Xylitol is derived from hardwood, in this case birch, as an upcycled waste stream from paper production. Origin: Finland.

Humectant and skin conditioning. Liquorice root extract hydrates and condition skin. It improves the appearance of dry or damaged skin by reducing flaking and restoring suppleness and possesses anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory properties. It’s also effective against hyperpigmentation and helps in reducing the redness and irritation associated with rosacea, psoriasis, and acne. Origin: Japan.

Skin conditioning. Ectoin is a small, natural stress-protection molecule, a so-called extremolyte. Extremolytes protect extremophilic micro-organisms and plants from the extreme conditions of their habitats like salt lakes, hot springs, permanent ice or deserts. On skin, ectoin provides long-term moisturisation, diminishes skin roughness and repairs the skin barrier, and is also an anti-inflammatory and anti-irritant. Origin: Germany.

Buffering agent. Citric acid is a commonly used buffering, i.e. pH adjusting, agent in cosmetics. It is made through bacterial fermentation and shifts the pH of the product into the acidic range. This is closer to the natural pH of the skin, which may range from 4 to 7, but is usually thought to be between 5 and 6, with recent studies, however, indicating it to be below 5.

Skin conditioning and preservative. Sodium levulinate is the sodium salt of levulinic acid, an organic acid that in this case is derived from sugarcane. Together with potassium sorbate it makes up the preservation system we use for the Mist. At the appropriate pH, the salts transform into acid, and voilà – product preserved.

Preservative. Potassium sorbate is widely used in a variety of foods and personal care products. It works by inhibiting the growth of molds, yeasts and bacteria to preserve the freshness and quality of foods, beverages, or cosmetic products. Potassium sorbate is the potassium salt of sorbic acid, which is naturally occurring in some berries, although virtually all of the world's production of sorbic acid, as well as potassium sorbate, is manufactured synthetically. Together with sodium levulinate, it makes up the preservative system in the Mist.
